Craving for Eel in Kawagoe? Try Ogakiku

By Big Explorer - April 14, 2018

Just around the corner in Kawagoe, we made our way to Ogakiku, a specialist eel restaurant serving all things - eel. The restaurant front didn’t have any English signage outside so we were a little confused and wondered if we were at the correct restaurant. Luckily, the attentive server showed us in and promptly welcomed us with a cup of roasted green tea, and warm heaters in winter to make our dining experience a cosy one. Luckily, the restaurant was well-prepared an english menu for foreigners.

Kabayaki, cost 2850 yen
Kabayaki (broiled eel over rice), the broiled eel was tender, soft and fragrant. this dish was also served with eel’s liver soup - sounds really unappetising, but this clear soup was pretty blend, no strong fishy liver taste.

Hone-Senbei 400 yen
Hone-Senbei (fried eel bones) were rather tasty and crispy, a good appetiser, highly recommended.

Yanagawa, cost 1400 yen
Yanagawa (eel boiled in soy sauce with egg and burdock) was little too salty for our liking.

Overall, a relaxing place to dine in after a day of shopping in Kura no Machi. We appreciate that this restaurant was not crowded with the right dose of traditional Japanese ambience.
